If students can rise at dawn for their dedicated duties at the University Farm, it figured that a photographer too could rise to the occasion. As part of their reporting for the alumni magazine’s cover story, the University Photographer arrived at 5:15 a.m. to spend a half-day following students as they fed livestock, released sheep into grazing pastures, moved cows and pigs from pen to pen, and drove tractors amid harvest. The Sustainable Agriculture Project, also known as SAP, is the university’s educational farm, which offers interdisciplinary learning options for GVSU students and provides volunteer opportunities for the community. Since May, the SAP has donated over 500 pounds of produce to support communities impacted by COVID-19. "Once COVID-19 hit, we saw a drastic need in the community on a multitude of levels. There are people that are in need of food assistance that have never sought out assistance before and there are other people in administrative positions that are making some of the hardest decisions of their careers. By providing fresh produce on shelves and flowers on doorsteps, we are hoping to encourage others to take that step closer to hope.” -Margaux Sellnau, interim farm manager and educator, Sustainable Agriculture Project

It has given me a space where I can turn off the electronics and focus on the task at hand. It's a place where I can build trust with an extremely powerful and talented animal. If you give things time and trust, it can lead to amazing things."
