The State Botanical Garden of Georgia at the University of Georgia opened the Alice H. Richards Children's Garden this spring. The process was photographed from the beginning stages of construction through the grand opening and first events held in the space. The end result: what used to be a parking lot is now an interactive, educational and exciting place for kids of all ages to cultivate a love of nature. The vision included making this garden a community space from the start. The designers turned to local artists to fabricate and design many elements in the garden, including the metal misting mushrooms, mosaic work and steel entrance gate. Treehouse and rope specialists came to design and hand weave the rope and climbing areas. Botanical garden horticulture specialists designed the beds and planting spaces and volunteers helped install the plants. On opening day, the garden was rushed by a group of children lucky enough to get the first views and their awe and delight was palpable. Having hands-on experiences is a defining feature of the space and kids can water, plant, taste and feel nature all around them. The garden was the vision of the family of Alice H. Richards, a former board member who had a love for children and a vision of a children's garden at SBG. Her family gave the initial gift in honor of her memory.
