 A palm folded into a cross catches fire as they are incinerated to make ashes on the north side of campus. Palm Sunday palms are collected at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart and saved to be burnt on a fall day. The ashes are distributed to campus chapels and priests for Ash Wednesday services in the spring. More than 10,000 palms were incinerated in an old metal St. Michael’s Laundry container and will make more than enough ashes for the campus community’s Ash Wednesday celebrations.
