It’s summer—a time when BU’s bustling campus takes on a noticeably more chill vibe. Classroom buildings are largely dark, the dress codes more relaxed, and offices tend to be sparsely populated as faculty and staff take advantage of the time to get away. 

It’s also the time of year when you’re most likely to encounter in the hallway a furry companion or two, faithfully accompanying their owner to work for the occasional office visit—often to the delight of colleagues who welcome the sight of a wagging tail and a lick or two.

It takes more than 1,500 employees from across the University—including from Dining Services, the BU Police Department, Campus Planning & Operations (CPO), Transportation Services, IS&T, and more—to pull off a Boston University Commencement each year. And then there are the 300 staff and faculty who volunteer to serve as ushers, marshals, and other roles on the big day itself. 

This photo essay is a glimpse at some of the many unsung heroes who helped make this year’s Commencement week a success.

After the realization that students were not attending career center events because they could not find a local barber or salon that specialized in diverse hair, a pilot program was started that provided students with access to free hair cuts/styling. The students attend career center events and in exchange, they can get their hair done whenever needed.
