By day, they’re doctoral students, researching hypersonic vehicles and high-temperature materials. By night, or at a moment’s notice, they’re rushing to respond to emergencies with the Rolla Rural Fire Department.

Meet Matik Heskin and Adam Boland. These two roommates and best friends have built their lives around heat, pressure, and quick problem-solving.

They prove that you can balance heavy grad school research with giving back to your community—running on little sleep, a lot of adrenaline, and a shared mission to make a difference.

OXFORD, Miss. — Four weeks ago, winter storm “Fern” brought more than just a freeze; it left the University of Mississippi fractured. As the ice slowly thawed, it revealed an estimated 100,000 cubic yards of debris across campus.

While recovery efforts have removed approximately 57,400 cubic yards of material to date, the university still mourns the loss of several storied trees that served as living landmarks for more than a century.University photographers stepped onto campus to document the recovery process. 

OXFORD, Miss. — Chicago has its deep-dish pizza, and foodies flock to Philadelphia for Philly cheesesteaks. Down in New Orleans, the po-boy has a long and storied history. In Oxford, the iconic food most identified with the town is the humble chicken on a stick. Chicken on a stick has been an Oxford tradition for decades, drawing long lines of University of Mississippi students, alumni and visitors at the 4 Corners Chevron on South Lamar Boulevard and University Avenue.

OXFORD, Miss. – As the crisp February evening rolls around after a busy second week of school, more than 40 current and former University of Mississippi students gather at the Gertrude C. Ford Ole Miss Student Union – not to study, but to practice.
