Step into Perkins Arboretum on a quiet April day and listen. There is gurgling runoff from snowmelt. The cheerful chatter of songbirds. The creaking of a swaying pine. But nestled between those notes is the distinctive “ping, ping, ping” of sap dropping into a metal bucket.
After a spring memorable for cold and rainy weather, the skies cleared and the sun peeked out briefly as members of the Class of 2025 stepped forward with hope and pride into the next part of their lives during Colby’s 204th Commencement on Sunday, May 25.
When Robert Augustine and Yee Mon Thu, both assistant professors of biology, were hired to teach at Colby, they were astounded to learn that they had something unusual in common: both study proteins that play a vital role in regulating gene expression and cellular processes like repairing DNA.

Seeing the potential for a one-of-a-kind collaboration, she reached out to both artists in November 2023.
