The minor in Sport, Media, and Culture (SMAC) invites students to examine the cultural politics of sport from a scholarly point of view, and to practice them with an eye towards social justice and the dignity of every human being. SMAC thus defines media broadly—to include visual art, historical texts, and performing arts as well as print journalism, radio, film, television, and social media—and incorporates analyses of race, gender, sexuality, class, and inequality from across the humanities and social sciences.

As a cultural and medical anthropologist, Dr. Marnie Watson immerses herself in her research, where she draws close to people in extreme circumstances. She asks questions to better understand, “how they deal with life in difficult situations.”  Much of her work has dealt with illicit drug use, mental health, poverty, homelessness and involuntary migration.   In Springfield, Missouri, Watson works with the previously unhomed at a tiny house community, Eden Village. Eden Village is built on the housing-first principle, which means, Come with all your problems.

Our university president at Missouri State University, who is beloved by all in our campus community, as well as in the local community has decided that the time has come to pass. Throughout the years, his substantial strides have transformed our university, and he will be hard to replace. We chose to create a scripted video so he could properly announce to all of Missouri State about his plans to retire. This announcement was a surprise to all, but was very well received and will allow for a search and for a proper sendoff at the end of the academic year.

This is a project that has been in the works for several months. We pitched the idea of creating a custom holiday village back in July and have spent the last few months learning how to create the product. We used our drone to scan landmarks across our campus with our president's home being the main centerpiece as we're celebrating 100 years of the home this year. Then, we partnered with our engineering department to print the 3D models. We touched up the models by sanding and painting them and then building the village in the front room of our president's house.
