On August 27, UIC celebrated the arrival of first-year and transfer students during the first week of the semester at its annual Convocation. After the cheering for thousands of new UIC Flames, the afternoon kicked off with a welcome from USG President Nathan Thokkudubiyyapu at Harrison Field. New students were provided with red UIC bucket hats and t-shirts before they assembled into the shape of the UIC circle logo mark.

Concertgoers were treated to UIC DJ Battle Winner, doubleU; UIC Battle of the Bands Winner, Math 125; followed by DJ Nanoos and Ric Wilson, and ending with featured artist Tinashe. Judith Johnson is wrecking the idea of retirement. The 65-year-old Texas Tech student is studying music after retiring from a career in nursing. In fact, she's now become the oldest member to ever play in the Goin' Band from Raiderland. This trailblazer is not fazed by marching alongside students who could be her grandchildren – she’s actually quite composed. “I’ve learned I can do anything,” Johnson says. “It’s my mind that tells me I can or can’t do something, not my age.”
