After loudly trudging through the trail, I was surprised to look up and find this fawn so close. The fawn kept eye contact for several seconds as if it wanted to ask if I was done disturbing its peace. Photo taken 07-05-22.
A leaf cutter ant carries a leaf cutting down the trunk of a tree in the Sarapiqui Rainforest in Costa Rica. Leaf cutter ants use the leaf clippings they bring back to their nests to cultivate fungus gardens to feed the colony. These tiny but mighty ants are also microbiologists. The fungus the ants grow is susceptible to another parasitic organism, however the female ants can neutralize the parasites with a bacteria produced in their own bodies. This discovery is inspiring researchers in the US to look at how these little ants could help develop bioenergy and biofuels.
