A killdeer, a large plover found in the Americas, preens itself near its ground nest about 100 feet away from a massive sandy vertebrate paleontological dig pit. The bird and its partner that was sitting on their nest (not pictured) did not seem bothered by the activity of researchers and volunteers digging fossils at the site, which is rendering many megafauna fossils from around 5 million years ago.
Spring means fireflies in Florida - if you are lucky and live a good distance from urban areas. Though there are 56 species of fireflies in the state, many Floridians have never seen one in their neighborhoods. State Parks are a great place to see fireflies due to minimal ambient light, restricted use of pesticides and little to no development. For the photographer this means her backyard, whose three acres back up to a 7,000 acre nature preserve. Every May she has a two-week window to chase fireflies, play with long exposures and feed mosquitoes. It's her most favorite time of the year (except the mosquitoes part).
