Two Florida Crown Conchs travers the coastal shore of the Gulf of Mexico. These scavengers keep the ocean floor clean, eating dead marine life that has washed ashore.
A piping plover chick tucks under its mom to join several siblings already warming up under her wings. Though the chicks forage from birth, they cannot regulate body temperature and need to check in regulary with their mother for warmth. These tiny migratory shorebirds have protected nesting areas along the Long Island Sound and are always a treat to see during the May breeding season.

At 10 p.m., I stopped by Lake Andrews and the Bates Museum of Art in search of the Northern Lights. After making a couple of predictable frames (along with everyone else on campus) that featured water in the foreground, and the vivid sky lighting up the museum in the background, I decided to let my freak flag fly. Removing the camera from its tripod, I maintained a long exposure and swung it around my head.
What a night.
