The first Saturday of April on campus is reserved for the Annual Glass Guild Blowout event, where a visiting artist comes to work in the campus hot shop and bleachers are set up for spectators to watch them create art. In this image, a student has brought a large "bit" of glass on a blowpipe over to the working artist, who uses his giant tweezers to guide the glass onto the existing piece. In between "bits," the entire piece has to be heated and re-heated, until all of the "bits" are added. At that point, the piece will be broken off the punty and put into a kiln to cool over a period of days.

In this image, two assistants (both alums of the University) are pouring molten glass, which is 2200 degrees Fahrenheit, into a sand-casting mold. Each copper ladle weighs 20 lbs and holds ~15lbs of hot glass, which feels even heavier at the end of a five foot pole - not to mention the radiant heat!
