A maritime cadet takes a magnetic compass bearing aboard Training Ship Golden Bear. The bearing is made by noting the direction from the ship to a landmark. If two or more landmarks are visible then the ship's exact position can be calculated by drawing lines from the landmarks on a map. The ship's location will be at the point where these lines meet.

This memento mori illustration was created to accompany a story about preventative cancer research. Memento mori, which means "you must remember to die" in Latin, is a reminder of the inevitability of death and the impermanence of life.
