Taken during production photos of the Summer Theatre's photo call for Spring Awakening. There were so many moments during this show when it became obvious that the choreographer and I have an aligned vision for imagery, and this is one of them. Throughout the production, the actors on stage in the black box theatre created beautiful shapes and interacted with each other and the lighting/haze in a stunning manner. (If my boss would have let me, I would have entered six images from this show!)

While I was photographing other art students in another portion of their classroom, Clare took a break from posing to continue making some of their senior thesis work. Completely unaware of the fact that I turned the camera back to their direction, I was able to focus on the creation happening behind the scenes during our marketing shoot.

Computer science senior Marcos Sanson, who recently completed an internship at the Air Force Research Laboratory, poses for a portrait on February 2, 2026. // This portrait was captured in-camera using a physical projection of a NASA nebula image. No AI was used to generate or alter the subject himself. Generative fill was used strictly to fix artifacts and distractions within the projected background area during post-production.

Pistol Pete, the university mascot, poses for a photo in a wheat field during the Lahoma Field Day at the North Central Wheat Research Station on Friday, May 15, 2026.

Retouching was done on the hat to hide chips and cracks in the paint, and a power line was clone stamped out of the background.

Candid moment of Dr. Michael Moore, Dean of the School of Fine Arts and Communication and conductor of the University Symphony Orchestra, during a dress rehearsal for an upcoming concert.

Composite, Generative Fill, or AI:
While this was a candid moment, I made extensive edits to the image, so it no longer adheres to accepted photojournalistic standards and cannot be submitted in the News or College Life categories. The Generative AI Remove tool was used extensively to repair scratches on the piano and music stand, as well as to remove dust and lint from Dr. Moore’s tuxedo. Selective masking was also used to darken the background and brighten Dr. Moore’s face in the shadows.

During a fine arts competition hosted at the university, two pianists perform a duet as part of the honors recital at the end of the week. Photo taken from the light rafters.

Composite, generative fill, or AI work done?:
Many scratches, scuffs, tape marks, and even a music stand were removed in Photoshop.

Photo of Biblical Studies student Nathan Monier in the university’s prayer room.

I Photoshopped a kicker light out of the background, and removed a small LED light reflection that was peeking out from the Bible and from his glasses. A Smoke Ninja was used to add atmosphere.

Photo illustration for a story titled "Immunotherapy for addiction: Study reveals link between alcohol use and the immune system"

Photo Composite of two images. I mirrored the one row of bottles to the other side of the image. I composited in the model and reflection into the scene, trying to match perspective as best as possible.
