Maddy Miller is coming back from the unknown after forgetting months of her life trying to find a diagnosis. She was paranoid, had erractic behavior, exhausted, could not remember how to tie her shoes or even spell simple words. But she doesn't remember any of this. Finally at the pediatric neurology ward at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Miller diagnosed with anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis (anti-NMDAR encephalitis), a rare neurological autoimmune disease that can cause seizures, hallucinations, memory loss and even death.
Paul and Martha Zerfas met as art majors at Grand Valley State University and have been married for 44 years.
