To celebrate Women's History Month and International Women's Day, our university's chapter of the Women of Integrity of the National Association of Colored Women's Club, approached our photo department about having an Empowered Women photo shoot. Different members of the student organization and other student volunteers came to our office for some fun portraits. These portraits were used for a social media spotlight. The student pictured is Kwyn Townsend Riley. She is a graduate student studying College Student Personnel Services.
Shane Woods is a Facilities Maintenance tech that spends most of his days in some dark tight spaces keeping campus humming along even at the height of Covid.
"To curb the moments of isolation and boredom in the pandemic, I turned to music. Playing music and listening to music brings me joy. Practicing music and learning new songs was a great way to lift my spirits when I was feeling down," said Tumaini Sango, a GVSU student. "Learning to play the melodica has reinforced for me the importance of patience. When I approach a new song or lick, I haven't always seen instantaneous results. I have learned that if I stay true to practicing and can be patient with myself, the results will come, slowly but surely."
This was photographed for our alumni magazine for a story about the student newspaper producing it's first print issue since the start of the pandemic.
