She skates with a smile on her face. Her enthusiasm is contagious as she cheers on friends and strangers alike. Meet Midori Ohtake, director of finance for the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, and former roller derby girl turned park skater.

“I love being on wheels. Anything on wheels — biking, skateboard, roller skates,” Ohtake said. “I just love moving faster on wheels.”

It’s difficult for Ohtake to quantify the amount of time she spends each week on skates, but she estimates it’s between two and 12 hours.

Those words from the 1989 movie “Field of Dreams” seem fitting to describe the venture taken on by Alex Frase, a maintenance assistant with Campus Living, and his young family.

“I’ll take whatever success has come our way. But the whole idea is just to be able to supply a product and afford a beautiful property for our family to grow,” Frase says. “It’s a perfect location for me and my family, and hopefully for the business.”

The business is The Frase Farm, a U-pick flower farm where customers can also buy pre-made bouquets.

For Jim Mauck, UB’s director of athletic bands, music is not just about playing a note.

“It’s a feeling, and when it’s harmonized together it has some serious power behind it,” Mauck says. “It’s a feeling that takes all of us to put together, so when the band’s really rocking and going, you’re not thinking; you’re feeling.”
