Skippers with disabilities from Shake-A-Leg Miami teach  physical therapy students about sailing – and life.

 

Since its launch in 1990, the Integrated Sports and Leisure course, an elective in the Department of Physical Therapy, has given nearly 1,000 students insight into the world of adaptive sports, communicating with people with disabilities and transitioning skills from the classroom to the real world.

As an addition to graduate student profiles featured in our Viewbook, I spend an hour with them in their research spaces.  Erica's Creative Writing MFA thesis has turned into a hybrid project encompassing drawing, sculpture and visual documents of artifacts.  I thought spending time in her tiny shared studio would best illustrate her work in this program.

The University of Nebraska–Lincoln celebrated the arrival of thousands new and returning students as they prepared for the start of the fall semester. The weeklong Big Red Welcome festival was packed with events intended to welcome students, foster school spirit, ease the transition back to academic life, and provide students opportunities to venture out and discover their community. As the new semester begins today, we're looking back on the excitement and energy that helped kick-off the new academic year at Dear Old Nebraska U.

Students enrolled in a Fine and Performing Arts course have added a new roadside view along U.S. Highway 77 in Beatrice.

The group — part of a Street Art II: Mural Masters class led by Sandra Williams, associate professor of art — spent more than a week painting a mural at Premier Chevrolet Buick GMC in Beatrice. Williams said project offers students valuable experience while connecting them to Nebraska communities. It also offers students a creative experience that cannot be replicated in a classroom.

It’s Ona Strang, student affairs coordinator in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, a True Blue ambassador who is committed to bringing joy to those around her.

 

“What I love most is the unexpected smiles I get,” Strang says. “To me, being a True Blue ambassador is bringing joy and doing something fun and unexpected during your average workday, class or study time.”

This is the second installment of portraits and narratives featuring people at all stages of their journey with cancer. The Many Faces of Cancer portrait series captures the powerful stories of individuals navigating the cancer experience — each in their own way. During 2023, I photographed and interviewed seven new Duke cancer patients, five years after launching the  initial project I started to give hope and inspiration to new patients and those struggling on their cancer journey.
