This is the second installment of portraits and narratives featuring people at all stages of their journey with cancer. The Many Faces of Cancer portrait series captures the powerful stories of individuals navigating the cancer experience — each in their own way. During 2023, I photographed and interviewed seven new Duke cancer patients, five years after launching the  initial project I started to give hope and inspiration to new patients and those struggling on their cancer journey.

On March 7, 2024, UIC Student Affairs provided UIC students with the opportunity to take a free road trip to support the Flames Men’s basketball team for the Arch Madness Missouri Valley Conference tournament in St. Louis, Missouri. UIC students and staff cheered on the men's team as they battled the Southern Salukis and Bradley Braves over the course of two nights. Hear from UIC athletes, coaches, students and staff about their journey and take a trip through historic St. Louis.

Between the beats of a metronome, the stops-and-starts of do-overs and three-minute water breaks, a deep bond forms at the Laker Marching Band camp over early mornings, hard work, discipline and even a few tears. 

The seven-day camp that starts each year before other students are on campus prepares band members for the first football game of the season. 

Early starts and steamy weather are part of the experience.
