Grow, a magazine devoted to the agricultural and life sciences, is published by the University of Wisconsin-Madison College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS). We report on the most significant aspects of CALS research, teaching, and outreach in the areas of food systems, bioenergy and bioproducts, healthy ecosystems, health and wellness, changing climate, and economic and community development. While our main goal is to keep our alumni and others connected to the activities of the college, we welcome all readers who have an interest in the life sciences. The stories you’ll find here relate to all of us — our lives and our livelihoods. The print version of Grow is mailed free of charge to CALS alumni, partners, and friends, as well as legislators and government officials, and leaders in agriculture, natural resources, and the biosciences. Our Mission To increase knowledge of and engagement in the significant work of the college To engender pride and foster a sense of belonging among CALS alumni, students, and faculty To strengthen connections between the college and alumni as well as among alumni from different areas of the college To promote the life sciences as an avenue toward economic, scientific, and intellectual growth

For our 2021 Admitted Students book, we needed to portray pandemic life as appealing, even fun! The admitted students who received this publication learned of their college admission decisions in an unprecedented, often scary year. A primary goal was to use photography that reassured students that Bates was navigating the pandemic in a safe way; we purposefully leaned into pandemic photography, showing masking practices, for example, and in a manner that didn't remove all the hallmarks of residential student life. Masked students walking to class was a perfect introduction, and we tried to maintain that tone throughout the book, mixing older, pre-pandemic and pandemic-year photography. We balanced fun with safety to reassure these admitted students (and their families) that this campus would be a wonderful place for them to start their college careers.

This set of publications; the Annual Report, the UVU Magazine, and the Vision 2030, were created with a unified intent to be distributed to donors, legislators, and alumni to inform them of the university's ten-year plan. The Vision 2030 plan includes a recap of past successes as well as proposals for academic and infrastructure changes that will affect higher education in the region. The primary audience is alumni, donors, and state legislators. The secondary audience is students, faculty, staff, and the community.
