This three-toed sloth, photographed along the banks of the Sarapiqui River in Costa Rica, is a male. The parted fur and dark stripe on its back is called a speculum and is only seen on males once they reach sexual maturity.
Rarely do the clouds part long enough for you to glimpse the active volcano in its entirety, especially during the rainy season in Costa Rica. We were incredibly lucky.
