Virginia Allen, age 93, recently visited campus and shared her story as the last surviving black nurse who worked in Sea View Hospital on Staten Island, N.Y. treating turburculosis patients. Recruited at age 16, Ms. Allen moved from Detroit to New York in 1947 to work at Sea View. The black nurses there, recruited from around the country, would become known as trailblazing Black Angels who contributed to developing the first successful cure for TB. During her tour of the university's nursing department, Ms. Allen was fascinated with the realistic medical manikins, including this particular pediatric patient who was audibly wheezing.
