This portrait of Cara Wekhamp, one of our indigenous leaders, will run with an article that explains Indigenous Land Acknowledgements in the alumni magazine. Her quote: "Land acknowledgments matter when we start really considering Indigenous peoples, the shifts and displacement that occurred in their lives in order for us to have our current relationships with the land.”
I wanted to show Dr. Wekhamp immersed in the land. I was thinking about the historical Edward S. Curtis portraits of Native Americans in the treatment.
