A wetland feature located within the NATL (Natural Area Teaching Lab) on the university's campus turned into a rare and all-natural "rainbow swamp" recently. The rainbow sheen in this instance is not caused by oil runoff, but by natural tannins in the water from the decomposing cypress needles. The conditions have to be just right for the tannins to rise to the surface and the sunlight hit them in just the right way to reflect this rainbow-like effect.
