Schoolchildren surround University President Astrid S. Tuminez as they pose for a picture moments after the ribbon cutting for the new A. Montes 1 Elementary School library. Tuminez and her two sisters donated the money to build the library in the village where their deceased mother was born and reared. The building was named in her honor.

Dr. Astrid S. Tuminez was appointed the seventh university president in 2018. Born in a farming village in the Philippine province of Iloilo, she moved with her parents and siblings to the slums of Iloilo City when she was 2 years old, her parents seeking better educational opportunities for their children.

Her pursuit of education eventually took her to the United States, where she graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor's degree in international relations and Russian literature from Brigham Young University (1986). She later earned a master's degree from Harvard University in Soviet Studies (1988) and a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in political science (1996).

Our department is working on our university magazine, and one article focuses on Terry Chambers, Solar Farm director and resident professor. I needed to shoot a portrait. Looking at a solar panel placed in a scanning machine, to check for possible defects, I saw that the panel was highly reflective. The thought was apparent and I light subject and the area for a straight shot portrait.

Bumi Oh, an Early Childhood Education Student, was nominated (and won) the academic excellence award for our college's Business & Public Services Technologies Division. Her application required a documentary-style photo of her in the classroom so we took this one together!
