Steiner Friday, October 3, 2025 in Cummings Arts Center. Students in the course created trick photos, one with the multigraph, and one recreating the famous 1872 hoax photo “Ghost of Abraham Lincoln” by the American photographer William Mumler. The course is a survey of the history and cultural context(s) of photography from its origins to the present day. The course considers photography as technological invention, artistic medium, social text, and cultural practice. Through lectures, class discussions, and hands-on workshops, students will explore the production, circulation, and reception of photographic images, and develop skills for looking critically at photographs.
