Joi Howard is hoping to transform the site of the former Crownsville State Hospital--an institution opened

in 1911 as the Hospital for the Negro Insane-- into a memorial park with a community center, urban farm, athletic fields and more. The hospital has a dark history-- many patients were experimented on, abused and died there. Howard, who founded an organization called enBloom, is focusing on the garden and spaces for healing and mental health, hoping to create a better future out of a tragic past. The garden also pays homage to the former patients, who grew crops, milked cows and harvested willow wood to make furniture and baskets, on the land.
