Paul Pitts made history in 1975 as the University of North Dakota's (UND) first Black student body president. Originally from Wheeling, West Virginia, Pitts served eight years in the U.S. Air Force, including a tour during the Vietnam War, before enrolling at UND in 1973. His leadership extended beyond campus; in 1976, he became UND's first student representative elected to the Grand Forks City Council
