Aleja Geiger-Ortiz, Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies, poses for a portrait in the Production Room of the Gordon Center for Creative and Performing Arts on Tuesday, March 25, 2025. Geiger-Ortiz recently received the NSF Early Career Grant to track island evolution and resilience through remote analyses of atolls. This award is prestigious, and only two or three were awarded to the entire state of Maine this year. "This award requires that half of the proposal is devoted to broader impacts and educational aims, so it's very intertwined with my teaching and student research here at Colby," Geiger-Ortiz said.
