Professor Carrie Keating, officially a professor of psychological and brain sciences, was honored in 2024 with Colgate’s top faculty award, the Jerome Balmuth Award for Teaching. Keating has studied the unique, neural trace charismatic displays leave in the forebrains of perceivers (Keating et al., 2020). In recent work, she and her students test whether charismatic leader's nonverbal communication effectively synchronizes inter-individual brain wave patterns in ways that dim cognitions of individual identity and activate collective identity processes, thereby making groups easier to lead.   “Whether heartfelt or feigned, face and body displays can be used to gain advantage during social interaction. Charismatic leaders are uniquely skilled at deploying these signaling systems: they  artfully “orchestrate” the emotions, thoughts and behaviors of many individuals at once,” said Keating.
