Mike "Guru" Hicks is so popular around campus that the athletic department actually had a bobblehead of his likeness produced. Hicks, who has never taken classes at the school, attends all the home basketball games and volunteers to help in any capacity he can.

Anna Williams, an enslaved woman, jumped from a third-story window in an attempt to escape from being sold in the interstate slave trade. Williams' story is being told in the animated short film, 'Anna,' which was produced by a team of scholars. A freedom petition and a still frame from the movie are behind Thomas along with two civil war era photos from the Smithsonian's new open collection.

Chris Carter, a Grand Valley State University alumnus, is conducting auditions for “The Wiz” at the Grand Rapids Civic Theatre. Carter, who was a cheerleader and dance major at GVSU, now has focused his attention to choreography and directing.
