Martin Luther King Jr. traveled north from his home in Atlanta to attend Boston University, a pursuit that eventually led him to the Twelfth Baptist Church in Roxbury, where he preached and worshiped while completing his theology degree. Seventy years later, the Rev. Willie Bodrick II finds himself treading a parallel path—after attending Northeastern’s School of Law, the Atlanta native is now the fourteenth pastor of the historic Twelfth Baptist Church.

“Nationally, about 41 percent of Black-owned businesses closed when the pandemic first hit,” said Ed Garner, regional director for the SBDC West Michigan Region. “Most were smaller businesses. Some
may have been able to reopen by now, but many are still struggling.” Born and raised in Muskegon, Deanna Gantt started her cosmetology program as
a senior in high school. She became a licensed cosmetologist as well as a licensed cosmetology instructor for the State of Michigan in 2004.

Dr. Niranjana Krishnan, an assistant research professor in biological sciences, says that certain insecticides are better than others for minimally impacting animal habitats. Krishnan recently published her research on milkweed plant habitats near corn and soybean fields in the journal Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry. In the article, she reviewed the toxicity of six insecticides commonly used in leaf and seed treatments and how they impact nearby monarch butterfly larvae.
Khalid Yusuf, the son of Somali immigrants, grew up with an appreciation for learning, and coming to the University of Nebraska–Lincoln turned out to be the “perfect opportunity” for him to pursue higher education. “They really pushed me to see that education is an important key to success,” Yusuf said. “I want to fulfill the American dream and go all the way to graduate school and do as much as I can to take advantage of an opportunity that my parents did not have. This lifelong learner mindset was the biggest attribute that they gave me, and I really appreciate them for that.”
