As each semester begins, students gather out on the quad lawn to explore and sign up for new camp extracurricular activities and social events that arrive in the spring air.
Portraits
Posed portraits of individuals or groups, in the studio, on your campus, or elsewhere in a university or college-related situation. The subject must be aware that they are being photographed. Other more candid “portraits” belong in the NEWS & COLLEGE LIFE category. Basic retouching/editing is permitted.

Reed, a Sociology major (Gilman recipient), who was interviewed by sports journalist Dave Zirin for his latest book, The Kaepernick Effect, and was interviewed for a Showtime documentary about the history of Black athletes and protest. As the keynote speaker at the "Power to the People: Own Your Activism" event on campus, she spoke about her own activism as a high school senior, when, as the captain of her cheer team, she protested during the national anthem at every football game that year. Alexis was inspired by Colin Kaepernick’s protests against racial inequality and the oppression of people of color.

Gianna Ligotino sits on a tree stump in the Campus Ministry courtyard in Austin, Texas, on Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2023. Her thesis examines the philosophical and political context for two 19th-century realist art groups — the Macchiaioli of Italy and the Peredvizhniki of Russia. Although they were responding to different political realities, both used art to advocate for social change. With support from the Martin Scholars program, Ligotino spent two weeks in Florence and Rome, studying work by the Macchiaioli.

We are intent on ending mass incarceration: by reorienting the state’s criminal legal system toward prevention, healing, and redemption; by stemming further growth in an already bloated and ineffective system; and by fighting for investments in community-based supports that exist outside of the system. We want all Texans to feel safe, have hope, and succeed, and it takes each of us to make that vision possible."
Alum Stanley Andrisse is the author of the book "From Prison Cells to PhD" about his journey from incarceration to professor of endocrinology.
