University of Michigan-Dearborn graduate Yusef Bunchy Shakur is the executive director of the Michigan Roundtable for Just Communities, a nonprofit that works to eradicate racism, discrimination and systemic inequities. Shakur also founded the Mama Akua Community House in Detroit after being incarcerated for nine years for a crime he did not commit. The wall he touches features artwork by Kevin “Rashid” Johnson, an imprisoned artist convicted of murder who maintains his innocence and says he was wrongfully convicted.

At UMass Boston, electrical engineering professor Ioannis Zografopoulos researches how cyberattacks can spread through modern power grids and how those threats can be contained. In the ICARUS Laboratory, he uses a full-scale virtual testbed that mirrors real-world power systems to study vulnerabilities in grid communications and to develop strategies such as secure data transmission and network isolation. His work aims to strengthen the resilience of increasingly complex energy networks while giving students hands-on experience in critical infrastructure cybersecurity.
